Copywriting Tips - Are All Great Copywriters Equal?

If you could learn from any great copywriter, or have a great copywriter write for you, who would you choose? Are they all the same? Are they interchangeable? The answer might or might not surprise you. The truth is, just like all people are individuals, so are those who write great copy. It isn't a one size fits all industry. This article is going to give you some examples of what I am talking about.

For starters, everybody has their own writing style. No matter what the general rules are, the words that each person uses are unique to their personality. For example, Paul Myers, who I greatly respect as a writer, uses so many words in his sales letters that I would have to look up just to understand what they are that I could never write like him. And then you have those who write in a very "street talk" style, like the writer of the "Rich Jerk" sales letters. This takes a special talent to write like this.

Then you have writers who specialize or excel in certain parts of the copy. For example, Andrew Cavanagh is a master of the headline. That is his specialty, not that the rest of his copy is bad. But if you want a headline that really grabs somebody's attention, then Andrew is the man to go to. Then there are some writers who are very good with telling stories and grip you right from the start with their carefully crafted story. These are the letters that you can't stop reading, right from the very first to the very last word.

Then finally, there are those who specialize in certain niches. Personally, there are only a couple of niches that I would write copy for because I am just more comfortable writing for them. Every copywriter has his or her preference and the quality you get is going to, at least somewhat, be influenced by that preference. Plus, if a writer has never written copy for say, the health niche, his first effort may not be as good as it would be for a niche he's written for, for years.

So if you take all of these factors into account, the writing style, the specialties, the experience with certain kinds of writing, and other factors that I haven't even gotten into, you can see that even among the great copywriters, you are going to find things that are better in some than in others.

So the answer to the question put forth is, no, not all great copywriters are created equal.
